The shopping scene in Thailand is as diverse and varied as can be found anywhere, with a vibrant mix from the East, West and Asia leading to products, goods and services from all cultures being readily available.
Thailand and Pattaya is as involved in the mobile phone craze as anywhere in the world and, it seems, just about everyone owns a mobile, or cellular, phone. There are three main operators of mobile phone services, AIS, DTAC, and Orange, the latest. The mobile telephone handsets come in all shapes and sizes, and, of course, price, and the selection depends much on the budget available and the options needed from the phone, for example, the cheapest cell phone has all the basic call and receive functions but will not offer much in the way of extras, memory, call waiting, messages etc. The more advanced the handset, the more functions are included and the more the price increases.
One may choose to sign up for a full account with one of the three service providers, paying a basic monthly fee and the cost of each call made by the minute. Or one may choose the pay as you use account, purchasing a pre-paid card that gives a certain value in calls and which automatically expires when the value is reached.
Shops which sell the cell phone handsets are everywhere in Pattaya and there is very little to choose between any of them as the pricing is dictated by the three providers. These shops offer all the brand names such as Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Philips, Siemens, Sony and Panasonic and can make all the arrangements concerning signing up for whatever provider and plan chosen.
The three service providers of mobile phones have small sub-office branches in Pattaya, which can only help with the payment of monthly bills and general enquiries. More official requests such as address change etc., has to be done in the regional office, the closest to Pattaya being located in Si Racha.
