Early Thais for beauty purposes used many Thai herbs. They were the forerunners of modern beauty products. Turmeric, for example, has a lengthy history of use in skin care. Mix it with a little talcum powder and apply to the face to nourish the skin. Aloe Vera has long been used in skin products as moisturizers, face packs and shampoos. It is recommended for preventing the onslaught of gray hair and in days gone by, Thai ladies used the clear, sticky sap as hair gel.
Kaffir Lime juice was used as a restorative and hair conditioner and tamarind juice as body scrub, followed by a rubdown with turmeric to exfoliate the skin and make it smooth golden brown.
Fingernails were coloured with fluid from the stalk of night jasmine flower and of course, chewing betel nuts produced luscious red lips. Papaya was widely used as body polish and exfoliation and rice bran as a facial scrub.
